Abstract

The dietary supplement market for supporting mental health is growing exponentially, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as individuals are more susceptible than ever to anxiety and other mental disorders. While the FDA has made considerable improvements in post-marketing surveillance of these supplements, limited evidence of the efficacy and safety of these products exists. Individuals suffering from untreated anxiety disorders face serious potential consequences. With no requirements to prove efficacy before entering the dietary supplement market, it is imperative that greater transparency about the effectiveness of these products is achieved. Additionally, safety issues in regard to adverse events associated with these products still exist. This study identified and analyzed anti-anxiety dietary supplements sold on Amazon. The purpose of this research was to identify and evaluate the potential risk mental health dietary supplements may pose to consumers.
