Abstract
This thesis presents a comprehensive landscape architecture thesis project proposing the design and development of a zoological garden in Columbia, Maryland. Columbia, Maryland was a planned community by Community Research and Development Inc., led by James Rouse. The zoological garden was proposed as part of the recreational and green space in the western portion of Columbia. The site spans approximately 111 acres, bounded by Maryland Route 108 and the Middle Patuxent River. This project brings emphasis on blending built structures with natural landscape, the use of native vegetation and topography to enhance animal habitats and visitor experience, and pedestrian pathways and greenways integrated with the broader city plan.
