Abstract
Utilizing current theories of gender representation in horror film, the project of this thesis is to analyze the position of the female protagonists in Tesis, Abre los ojos, and Los otros, the first three films of writer/director Alejandro Amenbar. I have attempted to show that the central female characters of these films mark a progression not only in the work of the auteur responsible for their creation, but also in the horror and suspense genres as they are currently understood. I propose that, unlike the vast majority of horror films, these three explore psychological issues either unique to women or from the female point of view, including maternity and fears associated with heterosexual relationships.
