Abstract

Although brief, the French writer Francis Weys acknowledgement and criticism of photography in the 1850s was among the earliest aesthetic analyses of the new medium. This study will explore his unusual affinity for paper photography, how his attraction toward the new medium echoed Realist concerns with the tangible, the contemporary, and the real, and his abrupt abandonment of the subject.
