Abstract
The House of Spirits written by Isabel Allende, in 1983 depicts the history of a Chilean family mostly through the female descendant of two courageous women. Even though Esteban Trueba is the principal character in the novel, several women are at the center of the story. Grandmother Clara Treuba as well as Alba, her granddaughter, are key figures in the novel due to their social and political activities during the dictatorship of Agusto Pinochet. However, one cannot overlook the importance of Transito Soto, who, unlike Clara Trueba and Alba, is a humble and marginalized women . Trnsito Soto never meets the other two woman, but their destiny is nonetheless strongly connected by the solidarity of the actions that all three women carry out in response to the barbarity and brutality of the countrys military agents. Likewise, these brave women reject the patriarchal rules of society and convert themselves into role models for independence. Ironically, Trnsito Soto achieves complete economic independence due to her economically-motivated sexual activities and because she is the only one who completely rejects the patriarchal and the capitalist system.
