Abstract

The purpose of this study is to report the findings of a process evaluation of a research education program designed to increase access and overcome known shortcomings to undergraduate participation in research. The evaluation identified factors and events that influenced success of undergraduates conducting evidence-based research in a summer camp setting. While a large scale educational intervention such as this seems feasible, our findings include the emergence of graduate students and other team players as key implementors, project types with higher success, the need for a liaison while working with a large community partner, the need to address multidimensional barriers, and the need for clearly outlined outcomes for assessment. Recommendations for future improvements include using a tiered incentive program, controlling cell phone use during instruction, including IRB and other recognized experts for instruction, and defining reasonable roles and expectations for all team members.
