Abstract
In this study, I investigate the manner in which poetry, and more specifically, the elegy, can serve as a literary and cultural instrument to achieve the mythification of a historical figure. In the context of the bullfight, I examine the poetic interpretation of the cogida of the matador, Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, in three elegies by the Generation of 27. I analyze the way in which the poems of Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca y Miguel Hernández address the crucial moment of the cogida in order to mythify Sánchez Mejías. I conclude that these poets were able to ensure that Ignacio's fame live forever in the memory of the Spanish people and therefore, that poetry can cause changes in a culture. En este estudio, investigo la manera en que la poesa, y dentro de ella, la elegía, puede servir como un instrumento literario-cultural para asegurar la mitificacin de un personaje histrico. En el contexto de la corrida de toros, examino la interpretacin potica de la cogida del matador, Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, en tres elegas de la Generacin del 27. Analizo la manera en que los poemas de Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca y Miguel Hernández se acercan al momento crucial de la cogida para mitificar la figura de Sánchez Mejías. Concluyo que estos poetas consiguieron que la fama de Ignacio viva en la memoria del pueblo español y que que este logro muestra que la poesía puede manipular y efectuar cambios en una cultura.
