Abstract

Social media is a popular form of communication among adults of all income levels in the United States. The purpose of this study was two-fold: to determine what UGA EFNEP participants and paraprofessionals view as an ideal social media presence for UGA EFNEP, and to compare what they want to current recommendations from EFNEPs Southern Region Social Media Committee (SRSMC). Focus groups were conducted with 39 EFNEP participants and 33 paraprofessionals. Participants and paraprofessionals were most interested in seeing UGA EFNEP use Facebook and YouTube and wanted to see bright, colorful content containing pictures, recipes, videos, and tips delivered several times a week. The SRSMCs recommendations can be tailored to UGA EFNEP by including more recipes and videos. These results suggest social media, an inexpensive means of communication, can be a useful tool for supplementing direct nutrition education in low-income adults with tailored nutrition messages that can be accessed anytime.
