Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how interior designers today use social media as a part of the creative design process for inspiration. This research is based on tacit knowledge theory; tacit knowledge is subconscious knowledge that is based on personal memories and experiences. Based on an extensive literature review, this study explores the tacit knowledge of interior designers associated with behaviors in the use of social media through qualitative interviews. With social media having made its way into professional practices, this study is significant because it furthers our understanding of how social media influences interior designers today. The interior design industry is a creative industry that has important social and physical implications on interior environments. This qualitative research study explores how tacit knowledge influences the use of social media by interior designers to get inspired, as well as how social media then influences the tacit knowledge of interior designers.
