Abstract
This study reinterprets Lena Groves role in William Faulkners Light in August by closely investigating the social conditions which produce the narrators ideology. Previous criticism has stripped Lena of her subjectivity by denigrating her as a bovine earth mother or fetishizing her as a mythological earth goddess. This study, however, rights the discourse by showing that the narrator presents ample evidence of Lenas psychological development. It also argues that the critical misunderstanding of Lena stems from the critical misunderstanding of Faulkners narrative voice.
