Abstract

Triggers have a well-established causal link between headache onset and recurrence among children with migraine or tension-type headaches. This study examined common headache triggers such as stress, diet, and sleep and their relationship with children with disabilities. Participants for the study were enrolled in a special education program in a public elementary school and had at least 4 or more headaches within the previous month. During the study, students recorded headache occurrence, and completed sleep, diet, and stress diaries for 10 days. Results from the study revealed that stressors found in the home were significantly associated with number of headaches. All other variables were not significantly associated with number of headaches. Results also revealed that students with disabilities reported more school stressors than home stressors.
