Abstract
Large bp andgamaterials doped with rare earth ions re acurrently of great interest as new vacuum UV phosphors for lighting nd adispls. ayn Ithis thesis, the optical properties ofYPO4 and YBO3 doped with Pr, Tm, Er, and Eu are described. The emission resulting from the VU Vn-11excitation of the rit pay allowed 4f5d sts tae and their quantum feficiencies are studied. n-11nRelaxation between the 4f5d and nearby 4f excited states is observed for some of these ions and the dynamics of these excited states is studied. n Idoubly-doped samples, the prospects for quantum cutting using cross relaxtiaon energy transfer in which some of the energy of the n-11 initially excited 4f5d stateis transferred to an eptoaccr ion so that both donor and ceptorac ions are left in an excited state from which they each can emit a photon are examined.
