Abstract
Nanjings urban area is facing a severe stormwater problem, especially in the area of the old city. Meanwhile, Chinas stormwater manual, Guidelines for the Sponge City (Low-Impact-Development), addresses how Low Impact Development (LID) methods are applied to different sites, but does not specifically mention Nanjing or its old city area. This thesis investigates how to apply different LID methods with the typical land uses in the old city as it is necessary for the success of a regional stormwater plan. The research involves looking back at national stormwater regulation plans of developed countries, the stormwater developing history and stormwater manuals including Chinas current stormwater manual, establishing the specific relationship between LID methods and land uses site-specifically. Case studies of green infrastructure applications in different land uses are analyzed. Three project applications in Nanjings old city are used to explore the possibilities of using LID methods to change the stormwater runoff condition.
