Abstract

This thesis explores landscape urbanism theory as a framework for urbandesign that combines cultural and ecological processes, and culminates in a designfor a waterfront park in the Seaport District in Boston, Massachusetts.Investigation of Bostons urban form as the product of ecological and culturalprocesses acting upon the city and the vital ecological processes of a New Englandsalt marsh yields elements that are incorporated into the park design. Analysis ofcase studies provides further insight into the challenges of combining these twooften divergent elements. The final design creates an urban park that recapturesthe history and identity of the area, links the Seaport District to its larger urbancontext in Boston, embraces ecological process, and provides stormwaterinfrastructure while contributing the greenspace essential for the health of theadjacent community.
