Abstract
The Masciadri School represents the pedagogical and artistic legacy of the double bass teacher Milton Romay Masciadri, built during over 30 years of musical practice in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Such a legacy spreads its influence locally, nationally, and world-wide through his students. While main pedagogical aspects of the Masciadri School were examined in the author’s master’s thesis, the present document is a further development of this topic, now focused on a lesser known chapter of this double bass school: its compositional legacy. The compositions dedicated to and premiered by Milton Romay Masciadri and his son Milton Walter Masciadri are examined here, accompanied by an introduction and contextualization of this production within the broader Brazilian concert music scene. The works Confluências, by Bruno Kiefer, Música para Contrabaixo e Piano, by Antonio Borges-Cunha, and Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, by Daniel Wolff, are provided with a compositional background, in addition to comments on technical, historical, and theoretical aspects. For Five Cadenzas by composer Celso Loureiro Chaves, an in-depth discussion of musicological, analytical, and technical features is provided in the last chapter. The primary result obtained by this research project consists of an informed catalog of this addition of double bass repertory to Brazilian literature, spotlighting a regional productivity that remained unheard for years.
