Abstract

The relatively limited double bass solo repertoire presents some interesting connections with the vocal and operatic repertoire. In this regard the work of Giovanni Bottesini immediately comes to mind, a renown opera conductor himself, leaving us with a handful of compositions for double bass in the style of Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti, and Paisiello arias, and representing some of the most iconic and virtuosic pieces in the bass repertoire. When it comes to transcriptions and arrangements of works originally composed for singers, Aprés un Rêve by Gabriel Fauré and Vocalise by Sergej Rachmaninoff are both staples of the double bass repertoire and constitute an inspirational source for this project.

The purpose of this project is to contribute new solo repertoire for the double bass with a transcription of Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss. This study contains an analytical chapter on one selected song and engages in performance considerations that highlight the practical issues of the transcribed melody on the double bass and the interpretational choices made in accordance with the analysis.
