Abstract
This thesis describes a process for soundscape design in outdoor socialization spaces where landscape can play a role in modifying the acoustics of outdoor settings to exclude unwanted noises and enhance desired sounds. It seeks to use soundscape thinking and methods to mitigate sound conditions in the commercial area, downtown, of Athens, Georgia. The primary objective is to develop a process and design guidelines for practical soundscape design which focuses on three aspects—sound blocking, sound masking, and sound enhancement. It includes consideration of acoustic attributes, cultural identification through management of appropriate sounds, and noise annoyance.
