Abstract

Using narrative inquiry, the purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding of the persistence and retention factors of sexual assault survivors on college campuses. This study involved six participants sharing their lived experiences through semi-structured individual interviews and engaged participants in arts-based research to help share their story through the utilization of song lyrics. Five themes emerged from the data analysis: Campus Environments, Student Engagement, Resiliency, Institutional Response, and Dear Higher Education. Utilizing Tinto’s Longitudinal Model of Departure as theoretical framework, this study found that formal and informal academic and social systems on campus impact the experience of sexual assault survivors on campus. This research advances the knowledge and understanding about the experiences of sexual assault survivors on college campuses.
