This document contains a topical analysis of a new commission by Clarice Assad entitled Macunaíma (2018). Scored for solo classical guitar, the composition is based on a text fundamental to the Brazilian modernismo movement by Mário de Andrade. The analysis will reveal that Assad uses musical topics as a means for representing indigenous Brazilian, Afro-Brazilian and Euro-Brazilian cultures found within Brazil’s populous.
