Abstract

To better understand the needs of educators who use aquaponics in the classroom, a two-part study was used to determine useful characteristics of a curriculum and important themes of a potential aquaponics web resource. Part 1 used a Delphi survey to ask educators about most useful curriculum characteristics, and the top 5 performing characteristics described a curriculum which focused on kinesthetic learning, providing examples of how to teach content related to standards, accommodating larger groups of students, aligning with standards, and providing lessons based on problem-based system maintenance scenarios. In part 2, according to participants, an aquaponics website needs to be designed to lead to information quickly, be aware of the time constraints of educators, provide opportunities for connection with real people, offer many options to access content, keep in mind its limitations, and begin with the end in mind regarding audience to be most useful.
