Abstract
ABSTRACTThe musical world is full of trumpet players who can perform the daily tasks of a premier military band musician. However, many young, talented players struggle to make significant progress in their performance of excerpts. Why does this happen? Perhaps the player does not have a strategic approach to establish and enhance the technique and musicality required for the excerpt. Rob Roy McGregor has created a series of orchestral excerpt books with helpful exercises that assist with the process of preparing the works listed. In his first volume, he states, “The excerpts tend to be repeated mindlessly with little air or no variation. This produces little improvement but a great deal of frustration.” I have designed a logical approach to these excerpts in order to establish consistency of execution, full command and understanding of the musical context surrounding each work, as well as a calm confidence going into the audition. All of the music in this project is for trumpet in B-flat. The majority of the studies highlight a focused section of the specific audition cuts listed, while others are more extensive than the original excerpt. The strategy of these studies is to condition the player beyond the requirements of the performance music, while still maintaining close attention to fundamental aspects of playing. Following each group of studies is a “performer’s guide,” which discusses certain things to hone in on for each excerpt as well as highlighting the reasoning behind the written exercises. Not only will the student of this book show marked improvement on the featured excerpts, but also develop their own creativity in the practice room.
