Abstract
Teresa Carreño was one of the most important female pianists of the late 19th and early20th century. Her virtuosity and fiery temperament at playing the piano led her to be an elite
concert pianist, praised and admired for musical figures such as Rossini, Brahms, Liszt, and
Anton Rubinstein, among others. Besides her role as a performer, she cultivated and developed
her genius for composition. She wrote over sixty pieces for solo piano, three instrumental works,
two chorus works, and two pieces for voice and piano. This document presents a performance
guide on selected piano works by Teresa Carreño based on the study of the score and the
author’s expertise on piano performance. In addition, it contains a brief biography and an
overview of her output for solo piano and compositional style. This study serves as a source for
future studies on Teresa Carreño´s music, a guide for pianists who wish to learn her music, and
as promotion of her piano works through a lecture recital.
