Abstract

Caprice in A Minor, Op. 1, No. 24 for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini has been a great inspiration for many composers. This study explores and compares the characteristics of selected five piano solo works based on the theme of Paganini’s Caprice No. 24. The main inquiry of this study will focus on how related and influenced Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms were to the other three lesser-known works by Mark Hambourg, Wiktor Labunski, and Isaak Yakovich Berkovich. Finally, the thesis focuses on three lesser-known works by Hambourg, Labunski, and Berkovich, comparing them with Liszt and Brahms’ work based on musical attributes such as textures, figurations, rhythm, meter, and hemiola, providing brief biographical introduction of the five composers.
