Abstract

The genre Bildungsroman is (usually) a narrative of the journey for the development and growth of male characters. Even though many stories were recounted by female writers telling the endeavors of women, in several of these stories their development cannot be complete. From the late 1700’s to the 20th century, these female characters did not have the same opportunities and privileges, such as traveling or studying, which was a reflection of their time. The genre evolved and became a place for varied stories to be narrated. Contemporary narratives demonstrate that writers incorporate perspectives that were not previously included, and more than ever they address concerns of our time. Among these apprehensions has been climate change. This research aims to analyze two Brazilian contemporary novels about female adolescents growing up in chaotic and uncertain environments. The works are cli-fi Bildungsroman, Viajantes do abismo (2019), by Nikelen Witter and Cidades afundam em dias normais (2020), by Aline Valek. These novels contribute to dialogues about desertification, flood, education, and art. Both novels cover environmental disasters which are depicted with elements of science fiction and climate fiction. Witter’s book uses steampunk elements and Valek uses subtle environmental changes in daily life. This research is sustained by various theories, including scholars of science fiction, climate fiction, and Bildungsroman in order to study the actions of these female adolescents and how they develop under chaotic circumstances.
