In this dissertation, we define a notion of trisections of 3-manifolds supporting contact structures. We introduce a notion of tunneling operation on trisections of 3-manifolds both in the smooth topological setting and in the contact topological setting (contact tunneling) and we show that the contact tunneling operation preserves the property that the trisection supports a contact structure.
