Abstract

Minimal literature exists on which voters follow How To Vote Cards in Australia. Voters in Australia use the alternative vote system and are require to vote and fill out a complete ranking of candidates, in this system, How To Vote Cards function as a shortcut for voters provided by parties. Using a logit regression analysis, this paper seeks to determine what characteristics of voters make the more likely to follow a How To Vote Card. The results suggest that voters that have strong partisan identities, lower levels of political knowledge, vote for minor parties, and male voters are the most likely voters to adhere to How To Vote Cards.
