Abstract

The objective of this thesis was to evaluate maturity, growth lint yield, fiber quality, and plant stress for two cotton cultivars exposed to four end-of-season irrigation treatments. This study was conducted during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons at the C.M. Stripling Irrigation Research Park near Camilla, GA. Lint yield was not significantly affected when irrigation was terminated at cutout in either year; although, in 2022, irrigation water use efficiency was maximized at this point relative later irrigation termination dates. The cultivars selected for this study were significantly different in cutout date, gas exchange rates, yield, disease incidence, and fiber quality. However, there was no interaction between cultivar and irrigation termination time for any parameter. We conclude that irrigation can be terminated at cutout to maximize IWUE, for early and late maturity cultivars, without limiting yield or fiber quality. This conclusion assumes a water-replete soil profile at termination.
