Abstract

Hurricane evacuation and the factors that play into why any given individual might choose to not evacuate is an area of coastal household evaluation that needs more research. This study sets out to help answer the question of what factors have a positive or negative effect on evacuation behavior or people living in US coastal southeast. Using three variations of a probit model, we found waterfront property, higher rates of expected damage from storms, more severe hurricanes (category 4 relative to category 3), increased number of children, and being male to have a positive effect on evacuation, and previous experience with storm damage and less severe hurricane (category 2 relative to category 3) to have a negative effect on evacuation.
