Abstract
This study examines the usage of emoji in online communication among two different communities, the LGBTQ+ community and Twitter users. The research analyzes the frequency and sentiment of emoji
usage in these communities to understand how users express themselves online. Results suggest that
certain emoji are specific to a particular community and serve as in-group codes for personal and collective
identity expression. Differences in sentiment between the two groups indicate the need for community-
specific sentiment dictionaries to improve accuracy in sentiment analysis. These findings provide valuable
insights into the importance of emoji usage in understanding online communication and expression in
different communities.
