Abstract

This Thesis presents a mythology curriculum based on three stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses designed for high-school students with annotated text, translations, critical questions, essay topics, and teaching notes for instructors with the following goals: to teach students to celebrate the beauty of ancient Roman poetry while also encouraging students, and teaching them how, to critique, analyze and challenge some of the problems present in these stories, with a particular focus on issues of misogyny and sexual assault that are pervasive throughout Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The goal of this Thesis is to provide a framework for teachers to incorporate lessons on Mythology from any culture into their classrooms in a way that celebrates the beauty of stories while also encouraging students to critically analyze text.
