Abstract
The project was commissioned to redesign the North Campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, focusing on landscape architecture to accommodate projected growth and modernization while preserving historical and aesthetic values. The design objectives were to address campus expansion needs due to increasing student enrollment (from 14,000 in 1965 to a projected 20,000 by 1970). Integrate new buildings: Law School addition, classroom buildings, Music Department, Student Center, and Library expansions. Solve parking and traffic issues, especially around Lumpkin Street and Baxter Street. Preserve the historic character and open spaces of North Campus. This project emphasizes “form follows function”: landscape elements should serve practical needs while enhancing visual appeal, to focus on pedestrian circulation, safety, and psychological comfort, to use of asphalt walkways, bridges, and mall developments to improve movement and accessibility.
