Abstract

The Master Plan outlines the historical significance, site analysis, development proposals, and management strategies for the Arkansas Post National Memorial in Arkansas County, Arkansas. It aims to preserve and interpret the site’s rich history while providing recreational and educational opportunities for visitors. Established in 1686 by Henri de Tonti, Arkansas Post was the first European settlement in the Mississippi Valley. It played a key role in French, Spanish, and American colonial expansion, and became the capital of Arkansas Territory in 1819. It was designated a National Memorial in 1960 to commemorate exploration and settlement in the Mississippi Valley. Located near the junction of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers, was subject to flooding; terrain is flat delta land with elevations under 180 feet, and features include historic ruins, a man-made lake, and existing state park facilities.
