Abstract
Kitchens of the mid-20th century can provide pivotal information regarding the architectural history and social culture of their time. These spaces are often underrepresented or even unstudied in relevant scholarship. Utilizing literature from three fields-architectural history, kitchen design, and preservation practice-this thesis highlights the need for a broadened approach to architectural history and preservation. The kitchen spaces of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian houses are analyzed to contextualize the contributions of kitchen spaces to broader American architectural and cultural history.
