Abstract

Since the passing of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914, Cooperative Extension has played a pivotal role in disseminating agricultural knowledge and supporting rural communities. However, with increasing urbanization, Extension faces significant challenges in maintaining its effectiveness and serving a more diverse audience. Organizational complexities such as increased competition for funding, justifying public value, and managing employee burnout and retirement will require leaders who are prepared to address these challenges. This study examines the pressing need for leadership development within Cooperative Extension, particularly considering the growing organizational complexities. Chapter 2 is an integrative literature review that identified gaps in the literature on leadership development programs in Extension which led to the development of a new framework. The Cooperative Extension Leadership Development framework (CELD) is a conceptual framework that supports practitioners in leadership program development. Chapters 3 and 4 present a case study that explored the experiences of Extension faculty who completed the Extend Advanced Leadership Development Program. Utilizing a mixed method research design, participants’ experiences are examined and themes related to a priori codes of reaction, learning, behavior, and results are identified. Finally, recommendations for future research and practice are provided.
