Abstract
This thesis investigates the influence of venue on music consumption and dissemination within the American music landscape, especially through the use of recent technology. This research focuses on classical music and the effect live streaming and alternative venue spaces have on conceptions of the Western art music tradition as a central genre of American music. Ideas of media and space from Marshall McLuhan, William Duckworth, and Michel Foucault provide a theoretical framework for the analysis. In addition to surveys conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts on the public’s participation in the arts, the study includes ethnographic work at various performance venues. The project centers on two performances at the venue (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City.
