Abstract
Jazz drumming stands near the apex of virtuosity, creativity, and complexity in the percussion medium. This allowed for drummers to perform in an arena that rewarded them for innovation. One key aspect of post-swing jazz is improvisation and soloing. This dissertation examines bebop and post-bop drum solos to further understand and visualize the originality and musicianship of such artistry. According to an interview with Lenny White, the seven most influential drummers in this genre were Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams. Through transcribing and analyzing five solos from each of these musicians, their legacy, ingenuity, and greater cultural impact will gain well-deserved attention and commemoration. The collection of solos from this effort will also serve as a pedagogical resource to both percussion students and professionals.
