Abstract
This research focuses on the integration of workforce housing in the city of Madison, Georgia, and how the city works to break down barriers in their housing stock using state, private, and federal resources. The questions addressed with this research are: why is affordable housing so hard for rural workforce individuals to obtain, and how can opportunities for workforce housing be created? Using case studies and an examination of publicly available housing resources, it is discovered through this research that housing in rural areas is hard to obtain because there is a lack of housing stock that is affordable, safe, and decent.
Opportunities for rural workforce housing creation can come from engaging the public, changing zoning, using different funding sources, and being mindful of available space in rural areas.
