Abstract

Nutrients leaching from improperly handled layer manure or mortalities can contaminate ground water. Poorly managed lagoons and egg washing operations can also contaminate surface and ground water. The manner in which manure is stored and land applied can make a big difference in its value as a fertilizer. Unprotected manure and improperly handled dead bird carcasses can pollute farm water sources and pose health threats to humans and animals.
