Abstract

The Produce Safety rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act mandates certain practices for fresh produce growers and distributors to manage the risk of foodborne pathogens. Industry and regulatory experts highly recommend having a written food safety plan in place at each farm. While this is only a requirement for farms selling certain kinds of fresh produce to the public, the University of Georgia Geography Department's Green Roof Garden program benefits from FSMA rules. Families and individuals receiving the food grown on the green roof are facing food insecurity and are more likely to face autoimmune diseases and more likely to have poor access to healthcare. The importance of food safety risk management is more urgent than ever in this program.
