Abstract

A 2021 holistic assessment of the University’s waste management system using the PLAN Atlas Zero Waste Assessment (Post-Landfill Action Network) was performed divided into two scopes, hard goods, which includes furniture, electronics, vehicles and C&D, and soft goods, which included all foodware and foodwaste, packaging, compostables and reusables.UGA had an overall score of 48.3%. Scope 1, hard goods, scored lower at 41.5% with low scores on Bin Standardization, Hard to Recycle materials, Construction and Renovation waste, Electronic waste, and Hazardous Universal Waste and high scores for Surplus Property. Scope 2, soft goods, scored 52.9%, with low scores in Reusable Dishware, Purchasing and Policy, and Infrastructure, and higher scores in Food Waste Reduction, Composting and Bin Standardization. Research was conducted by Avery Lumsden and Benji Holmes as part of a UGA Office of Sustainability Internship.
