Abstract

Following the global COVID-19 pandemic in the 21st century, people are searching for new strategies to address public health crises, and the use of therapeutic landscapes has attracted increasing attention. Clearly, this provides new opportunities for the landscape industry but problems still affect practical applications, such as insufficient understanding and a lack of theory, which limit its truly effective development. Therefore, in the present study, the author addressed the issue of landscape improvement from the perspective of urban green space design. The main background details, research methods, and findings are summarized as follows.(1) The author discuss current progress in horticultural therapy and health industry construction, as well as analyzing relevant cases, summarizing the current application status and prospects for horticultural therapy, and the feasibility of applying horticultural therapy to urban landscapes. (2) Based on related case studies, the author refined the methods used to construct a therapeutic landscape, as well as analyzing its advantages and disadvantages, and summarizing and applying them in actual practice. (3) The author used the east side of Yijishan Shan Hospital in Wuhu City, Anhui Province, China, as a practice site to design an urban green space as a therapeutic landscape based on results obtained by analyzing previous research. A comprehensive urban green space was constructed by focusing on health preservation, integrating sightseeing, leisure, and entertainment, and science education . The aim of this study was to propose a new design scheme for therapeutic landscapes based on theory and previous research. More systematic and scientific therapeutic landscape construction methods were developed by leveraging the existing high-density medical resources in China. The proposed approach can potentially be applied to address aging and sub-health issues.
