Abstract

This thesis examines the ways that humans perceive their urban environment, and how those perceptions inform each individuals aesthetic judgments. The objective is to show how landscape architects can encourage and invite pedestrian experiences through the physical shaping of the city. The review of scholarly literature and case studies yields aesthetic principles that can be utilized by landscape architects that encourage participation through walking, and thereby focus interventions in the urban environment on pedestrian experience.
