Abstract
This thesis documents and evaluates the career of architect Joseph Stillburg (1847-1923), focusing on his early career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1880 to 1900. Relatively little academic research has focused on Stillburg's career, this thesis seeks to examine Stillburg's notable works and architectural legacy in Pittsburgh, thus filling a gap in the architectural histories of Western Pennsylvania. Archival research, fieldwork, oral history with descendants, and a review of published literature illuminated the importance of Stillburg's career and legacy. Research conducted for this thesis identified over eighty known completed designs attributed to Joseph Stillburg, ten of which are extant, and suggests that he was one of the region's most prolific and important architects of the late nineteenth century.
