Abstract

The writing for violin in Robert Schumanns Violin Sonata no. 3 in A minor WoO 2 has been labeled by some as problematic, but existing literature does not clearly define what these problems are. The purpose of this paper will be to examine the relationship between Schumanns musical goals and technical, violinistic issues which have been seen as contributing to the works problematic nature, to define these problems more clearly in violinistic terms, to present techniques for management (solutions in the form of fingerings, bowings, and potential exercises for practicing), and to examine the works pedagogical usefulness.
