Abstract

Homelessness is a complex and multifaceted issue within public spaces that is often compounded by the conflicting needs between the homeless and non-homeless users. Inclusive design offers a framework to creating guidelines that attempt to accommodate the needs of the homeless without excluding those of other public space users. This thesis attempts to uncover the features that constitute true public space, understand the needs of the homeless, develop inclusive design guidelines, and determine where and how these guidelines can be placed within the public realm. In doing so, designers are provided with methods of approaching homelessness from an inclusive rather than an exclusive viewpoint which creates a more successful public place for all.
