Abstract

The purpose of this project was to develop a user-friendly computer database for collegiate opera workshop directors who wish to find operatic works, roles, and arias appropriate to their particular singers. The design of the database was largely dependent on the inclusion of researched parameters such as aria tessitura, shortened duration, and Fach designations because of their relevance to collegiate singers and their absence from similar catalogues. Research associated with these three parameters is included in this document, as well as an examination of the remaining forty parameters contained in the database. To demonstrate the capabilities of the database, complete information from four operas is included, along with a list of fifty short operatic titles and their respective composers. Two appendices to this document contain tables of all data included in the database and sample query reports. The work involved with the design of this database establishes the foundation and the relationships between the data tables. Although all the data contained within the database can be viewed in Appendix A, the graphical user interface (GUI) is operational through Microsoft Access.
