Abstract

Cotton and soybean cultivars developed for resistance to dicamba and 2,4-D have created concern that the increased use of growth regulator herbicides throughout the growing season will increase occurrences of injury to nearby peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) from accidental exposure. Research correlating peanut injury and canopy diameter with probable yield loss is deficient. Field studies were conducted to quantify peanut response to dicamba and 2,4-D applied preemergence and throughout vegetative growth stages. Peanut response was variable by location after preemergence dicamba treatments. 2,4-D applied preemergence did not affect yield. Peanut had greater injury and yield loss from either herbicide applied closer to R1 growth stage. Correlations of peanut injury 20 DAT, canopy diameter 20 DAT, and yield were significant and may help estimate potential peanut yield loss. Growers should use caution when applying dicamba near peanut throughout vegetative growth stages or applying 2,4-D during V3 to V5 growth stages.
