Abstract
In 1529, Juan de Valdés published his first dialogue entitled Diálogo de doctrina cristiana. The Spanish Inquisition condemned the work for its heretical ideas. Valdés chose self exile spending the balance of his life in Italy, but he never recanted his beliefs. This study examines a seminal work on Valdés by José C. Nieto and evaluates the links between Valdés Christian faith and his theory of expression as espoused in his second dialogue, Diálogo de la lengua. The thesis also emphasizes the important role Valdés played in the dissemination of Reformation theology in both Spain and Italy. Though Nieto points out that Valdés writing and thinking reflects erasmian influence, the thesis maintains that the greater impact upon his theological stance stemmed from the teaching of Pedro Ruiz de Alcaraz who taught the young Valdés while both were in the service of the Marquis de Villena in Escalona, Spain.
