Abstract
GSKs Cervarix is the first HPV vaccine licensed for use in China and will be launched there in 2017. Since news media stories and content can influence peoples knowledge of HPV vaccine and their intention to get vaccination, this content analysis focused on what information about the HPV vaccine was relayed to the public in news media, and how this content was portrayed before the 2017 HPV vaccine implementation. This is important because media coverage can shape perceptions of vaccine benefits and risks. A total sample of 253 articles published from 2000 to 2016 were collected and coded. The results showed that HPV and the HPV vaccine received modest coverage; few articles attributed the approval delay responsibility; party press used more thematic framing than city press; and severity message was the least frequently reported among the six Health Belief Model constructs in the coverage. Practical implications and future research directions were discussed.
