Abstract

Obesity, especially in children, is a major problem in the United States. Thisstudy aimed to test technology use in effecting change in nutrition behaviors inpreschoolers and their families. Using the theory of diffusion of innovation and a childas change agent model, the researchers designed a five week curriculum appropriate forpreschool children. One class recorded daily webcam videos about their activities, whilethe control condition relied on traditional communication. Children and parents in bothgroups completed pre- and post-surveys to determine the effect of the intervention onknowledge, preference and behavior. While the data yielded largely insignificantresults, increase in fruit consumption in parents of the children in the experimentalcondition was significant. This study suggests that media is useful in reaching parentsof young children. However, revision of the instruments and streamlining the use oftechnology would be an important step prior to repeating this intervention.
